Puffins: The Adorable Clowns of the Sea

March 14, 2025 • Grace Micere

Puffins are nature’s delightful mix of penguins, parrots, and a touch of pure cartoonish charm. With their colourful beaks, waddling walks, and impressive flying skills, these seabirds have captured hearts across the globe.

You may be wondering what makes puffins so special and why should we care about them? In this article, we’ll dive into some fun facts about these little ocean adventurers and let you in on how you can help prevent them from existential threats.

Fun Facts About Puffins

Let’s dive into a few fun facts about puffins that you probably haven’t come across. And if you have, you’re a true puffin lover!

1. Puffin Nicknames

Puffins are often called the “clowns of the sea” due to their brightly coloured beaks and amusing mannerisms. They’re also known as “sea parrots” thanks to their beak’s resemblance to a parrot’s.

2. Beak Makeover

A puffin’s beak isn’t always that brilliant orange, yellow, and blue. In winter, their beaks fade to a dull grey. When spring arrives, they shed the dull outer layer, revealing vibrant colours just in time for mating season. This is what we mean when we’re talking about a natural glow-up.

3. Avid Flyers & Swimmers

Despite their stocky build, puffins are incredible flyers, flapping their wings up to 400 times per minute and reaching speeds of 55mph / 89kph! They’re also skilled swimmers that use their wings like flippers to propel themselves underwater.

4. One Beak, Many Fish

Puffins are expert fishers, and their specialised beaks allow them to hold multiple fish at once; sometimes over a dozen. They use their tongues to pin fish against the roof of their mouths while catching more.

5. Home Sweet Burrow

Unlike many seabirds that nest on cliffs, puffins dig burrows in grassy areas. These cosy underground homes provide shelter for their chicks, known as “pufflings.” Yes, that’s the real name, and yes, it’s impossibly cute.

Why Should We Care About Puffins?

Puffins aren’t just charismatic little birds; they play a vital role in marine ecosystems. As top predators of small fish, they help maintain healthy ocean food chains. They’re also indicators of ocean health. This means that when puffins struggle, it’s often a sign that something is off in the marine environment.

Beyond that, they bring joy to people worldwide, drawing eco-tourists to their nesting sites and inspiring conservation efforts. Imagine a world without puffins—less colour, less charm, and one less reason to smile.

Threats that Puffins Face Today

Unfortunately, puffins are facing serious challenges, and their populations are declining in many parts of the world. Some of the biggest threats include:

  • Climate Change – Warming oceans affect fish populations, and this makes it harder for puffins to find food. If their primary food sources, like sand eels and herring, decline, puffins struggle to feed their chicks.
  • Overfishing – Commercial fishing depletes the same fish species that puffins rely on, leading to food shortages.
  • Habitat Loss – Coastal development and human activity disturb puffin nesting sites, and this reduces safe spaces for them to breed.
  • Pollution – Oil spills and plastic waste pose significant dangers to puffins. Birds that ingest plastic or get covered in oil often don’t survive.
  • Invasive Species – Rats and other predators introduced to puffin nesting islands can devastate colonies by eating eggs and chicks.
