Save the Red Squirrels

With Northumberland Wildlife Trust

Red squirrels are an iconic species in the UK, but unfortunately, they are endangered and at risk of extinction due to a combination of factors, including habitat loss, disease, and competition from non-native grey squirrels. The population of red squirrels in the UK is estimated to be less than 140,000, while the population of grey squirrels is estimated to be over 2.5 million.

It is important to help red squirrels in the UK because they play a crucial role in maintaining the health and diversity of our forest ecosystems. Red squirrels are important seed dispersers and help to maintain the health of forests by reducing the population of pests and insects that can harm trees. They are also a cultural icon and a beloved species for many people in the UK. By supporting organisations like the Northumberland Wildlife Trust, we can help to protect and conserve this important species and ensure that our forest ecosystems remain healthy and vibrant for generations to come.

The Northumberland Wildlife Trust is a charity that works to protect and restore wildlife and wild habitats in the North East of England. The charity manages over 60 nature reserves, including some of the most important and rare habitats in the region, such as heathland, wetlands, and ancient woodland.

They also work to promote education and awareness of local wildlife and provide opportunities for people to get involved in conservation activities.

The work of the Northumberland Wildlife Trust is important because it helps to protect and preserve the biodiversity of the North East of England, which is home to many rare and endangered species. The nature reserves managed by the charity provide vital habitat for a range of species, from otters and water voles to red squirrels and black grouse.

By engaging with local communities and promoting education and awareness, the charity also helps to inspire the next generation of conservationists and ensure that the value of our natural world is recognised and protected.
