Tiger moths are well known for their uniquely coloured wings. They are orange and black with some white patches too. Talk about making a statement! Tiger moths are nocturnal fliers native to England, Wales and Scotland. They are fuzzy little critters that are often spotted crawling across roads and gardens.
It’s genius how they avoid getting eaten by other animals and birds. They use both their vibrant colours and a sonar jamming technique to keep predators away. How? Well, most birds and animals know that insects with orange and black colours are not tasty. What’s more, when they hear a bat approaching with its echolocation clicks, they produce their own ultrasonic sounds to mess with the bat’s navigation system.
Tiger moths live in wet meadows, scrub-covered sand dunes, gardens, parks and woodland edges. Their caterpillars are fondly called Woolly bears because they are fuzzy with hairs that can cause irritation when touched. They feed on garden plants like stinging nettles and dock leaves.
Sadly, tiger moth populations are declining. This is mainly because of habitat losses as we “tidy up our countryside.” Whenever we spray weedy areas and clear up hedgerows, we deny them the opportunity to have the breeding conditions they need to reproduce.
The Essex Wildlife Trust is an organization that’s committed to protecting wildlife through landscape conservation, education on their nature reserves and discovery centres. They also launch and run campaigns that help to give wildlife a greater voice in Essex. Bare Kind has been able to achieve an all-time high of donations in recent years. The business expanded its sock range to 40+ pairs and supports 25+ charities.
