Beavers in the UK are known as the Eurasian beaver, a semi-aquatic mammal well known for their flat tails and impressive engineering skills by building dams.

They are incredibly vital for their ecosystem, their dams create wetlands that become habitats for a large variety of wildlife. Their dams also help with water purification, flood control and supporting the local biodiversity.

Beavers used to be found in the UK, but they were hunted to extinction for their fur and castoreum, a secretion using in perfumes, around 400 years ago.

Thankfully there have been successful projects to reintroduce beavers back, with populations of beavers now thriving in Scotland, London and other parts of the UK.

Although these reintroductions have been successful, there is a still a long way to go as beavers face many threats from habitat loss and impacts from human activity.

The UK harvest mouse is Britain’s smaller rodent, weighing only around 4-6g, about the weight of a pencil.

They have golden brown fur and long tail which is about the same size as its body at round 5-7cm. Their tail is prehensile which means it is capable of grasping and they use it to climb.

Harvest mice are very good climbers, and they make spherical nests from grass above the ground, usually in tall grasses and hedgerows.

The harvest mouse is classified differently across the UK, being of least concern
in England but vulnerable in Wales and critically endangered in Scotland.

The stork is an iconic, large bird, well-known for its gorgeous white plumage, black wing feathers and long red legs and bill.

Storks used to be native to the UK but went extinct in the 15th century due to hunting and habitat loss.

There have been successful projects to reintroduce storks to the UK which ledto the first breeding pair in over 600 years.

As well as focusing on reintroduction of the animal, conservation efforts are focusing on the other significant threats that impact storks such as habitat loss, degradation and the impact of human development like power lines.

Both beavers and storks have been brought back from extinction in the UK due to rewilding efforts.

Citizen Zoo is a charity dedicated to rewilding efforts, focusing on restoring habitats and reintroducing species to their natural environments.

The work of Citizen Zoo has been key for the successful reintroduction of beavers to the UK. Their work focused on closely monitoring beaver populations, creating and maintaining safe habitats for them to thrive and grow.
Citizen Zoo has wonderful projects to engage the local community and produced a dedicated team of volunteers to help support the projects.

Citizen Zoo is trying to protect harvest mice populations with reintroduction projects and by working with local communities to protect and restore their habitats. The projects involve habitat surveys, nest building and community education, raising awareness of the importance of harvest mice in the ecosystem.

Storks are migratory birds, and they face many dangers on their long journeys.
Citizen Zoo is trying to reduce their dangers by conserving wetland areas, providing stopover habitats on the stork’s long journey.

Citizen Zoo's work include public education, working with the community, and scientific research to support the long-term survival of these species. Their rewilding projects not only help the target species but also enhance biodiversity and ecosystem health, benefiting a wide range of flora and fauna.

We donate 10% of profits from your beaver, mice and stork socks to

Our Philosophy

Restoring the biodiversity of our planet and its varied species is at the core of Bare Kind’s mission. By donating 10% of gross profits to charities that support the animals on our socks, we can continue fighting the fight against species extinction.

Bare Kind has been able to achieve an all-time high of donations in recent years. The business expanded its sock range to 40+ pairs and supports 35+ charities.

Our Charity Impact Reports highlight the projects we have been able to fund with our charity partners and the incredible animals we support.

Our hope is that something as humble as a pair of socks can make a lasting impression on our world and change it for the better. A huge thank you goes out to all our customers who have wanted to make a difference and empower the restoration of our planet with their socks.
