Save the Swallowtail Butterflies

With Butterfly Conservation

Swallowtail butterflies are a group of enchanting and distinctive butterflies known for their striking colors and unique wing shapes.

They are often recognised by their vibrant hues and elongated "tails" that extend from their hindwings, resembling the forked tail of a swallow, which gives them their name.

Swallowtails can be found in various parts of the world, with different species inhabiting different regions.

These magnificent butterflies are a true testament to the beauty of the natural world, captivating nature enthusiasts and butterfly lovers with their elegance.

Despite their beauty and charm, swallowtail butterflies face significant endangerment.

Habitat loss, climate change, and pesticide use are some of the primary threats to their survival. As these factors continue to impact their populations, it's crucial to take action to protect these delicate insects.

One of the most endangered swallowtail butterflies is the UK Swallowtail (Papilio machaon britannicus), which is endemic to the Norfolk Broads in the United Kingdom. This subspecies is particularly vulnerable due to the loss of its unique fenland habitat.

The UK Swallowtail is one of the UK's rarest and most endangered butterflies, with only a few small populations remaining.
