Save the Bats with Bat Conservation Trust
Bats are an important part of the UK’s wildlife, playing a crucial role in controlling insect populations. All 18 species of bat found in the UK feed on insects, helping to keep numbers of moths, midges and other night-flying insects in balance. Bats are also a vital part of the UK’s biodiversity and play an important role in helping us understand the health of the natural world. As bats rely on clean water, abundant insects, connected habitats and safe roosts, they are highly sensitive to environmental alternations, making them useful indicators of biodiversity health across the UK. However, bats face growing threats, including habitat loss, pesticide use and climate change. Our socks support efforts to protect bats and help make a meaningful difference in preserving these remarkable animals.
Several UK bat species are experiencing population declines due to pressures on their habitats and food sources. This is concerning because bats play a vital role in controlling insects, including species that can damage crops and affect agriculture. Without bats, ecosystems would be less balanced and farmers could become more reliant on chemical pest control. By supporting charities that work to protect bats and their habitats, we can help ensure these animals continue to thrive for future generations. Conservation efforts that restore habitats, encourage responsible pesticide use and raise awareness about bats help strengthen the health and resilience of the UK’s ecosystems.
Almost a third of the UK's bat species are at risk of extinction.
The Bat Conservation Trust is a charity dedicated to protecting and conserving bat populations across the UK. Their work includes researching and monitoring bat populations, protecting important habitats and educating the public about the importance of bat conservation. Bats are also considered indicators of environmental health because they depend on healthy insect populations, clean water and safe roosting sites. When bat numbers decline, it can signal wider environmental pressures affecting many other species.
By protecting and conserving bats, the Bat Conservation Trust helps support the health and diversity of the UK’s ecosystems. Their work promotes greater awareness of wildlife conservation and encourages more sustainable approaches to land management. By supporting the Bat Conservation Trust, individuals and businesses can help ensure bats continue to play their vital role in maintaining healthy and balanced ecosystems across the UK.
We funded the resources to advise 25 Helpline Officers on how to help roosting bats.
