Save the Bears
With Animals Asia
My friends, gather round and meet the magnificent ursine giants of Asia! From the hulking Himalayan brown bear to the honey-loving sun bear, these furry enigmas captivate and intrigue. But fear not, their gruff exteriors belie a complex intelligence and fascinating social lives. Mothers tenderly raise their cubs, teaching them the secrets of scavenging and foraging. Solitary hunters by day, some species gather in grand autumnal feasts, sharing berries and fish in a spectacle of camaraderie.
Yet, these marvels face precarious futures. Poaching for fur and body parts, habitat loss due to deforestation and development, and even human-bear conflict cast a long shadow over their survival. The IUCN paints a somber picture – six of the eight Asian bear species are listed as Vulnerable or worse, with the sun bear clinging to existence as Critically Endangered.
Founded in 1998, Animals Asia is a leading international NGO championing animal welfare in Asia. They tirelessly combat cruelty, promote compassion, and work for a future where all animals are treated with respect.
Animals Asia focuses on ending bear bile farming, a brutal practice inflicting immense suffering. They rescue bears, providing a sanctuary in peaceful forest enclosures where they can finally express their natural behaviours.
Beyond bears, Animals Asia's impact extends to:
Dogs and cats: Campaigning against the dog and cat meat trade and promoting humane population control.
Zoos and safari parks: Advocating for improved animal welfare standards and promoting ethical wildlife tourism.
Endangered species: Engaging in conservation efforts for vulnerable species like moon bears and Chinese pangolins.
6 of 8 Asian bear species are categorised as Vulnerable or worse
Their work relies on:
Education and awareness: Raising public understanding of animal cruelty and inspiring change through captivating storytelling and campaigns.
Community engagement: Collaborating with local communities to find sustainable solutions for human-animal interactions.
Policy advocacy: Pushing for stronger animal welfare laws and regulations in Asian countries.
Animals Asia's dedication to bears shines through in initiatives like:
Bear sanctuaries: Providing lifelong care for rescued bears in spacious, natural enclosures, allowing them to climb, swim, and forage.
Moon Bear Release Program: Working with Chinese authorities to release rescued moon bears back into protected wild areas.
