How Animals Keep Cool in the Summer: Ducklings, Goats & Highland Cows

June 09, 2025 • Grace Micere

When the summer sun turns up the heat, humans rush to get ice cream, switch on fan and seek the sweet relief of a cold drink in the shade. But have you ever wondered how our furry and feathered friends stay cool during the warmer months?

Let’s take a peek at how ducklings, goats, and highland cows manage to beat the heat during hot summer months, and what we can learn from them. Hint: staying dry and comfy is key.

🦆 Ducklings: Born to Paddle

Ducklings might look like little balls of fluff, but they're perfectly designed for summer. Being water-loving creatures, they take full advantage of ponds, puddles, and even a good garden sprinkler to stay cool.

The duckling’s downy feathers provide insulation and keep water out, helping them regulate their body temperature while they splash about. Plus, have you ever seen a duckling just plonk itself in the shade with its feet out behind it? Iconic and smart.

Speaking of ducklings — our adorable duckling socks bring a splash of charm to your summer wardrobe. Made from our signature bamboo fibre they’re not only soft and breathable but also feature the cutest little duckling designs.

🐐 Goats: Shade Seekers with Built-In Cooling Systems

Goats are clever heat-dodgers. They’ll actively seek out shady spots, even climbing something ridiculous, just to find one and rest during the hottest part of the day. Their short coats help with heat management. They can even regulate blood flow to their skin to cool down more efficiently. And if you see them lying on their backs with their legs in the air, it’s not a yoga move, it’s just a goat cooling off.

Our goat socks are perfect for the wild-at-heart. Wear them when you’re scaling hills or lounging in the shade enjoying some ice cream or a cool drink. These cosy socks keep your feet cool, cushioned, and smelling fresh.

🐄 Highland Cows: Fluffy but Functional

With their fabulous fringes and thick coats, you’d think Highland cows would melt in the sun. But surprisingly, their shaggy hair actually helps protect them from sunburn and insect bites. It also keeps them cool by insulating against extreme temperatures. They'll often chill out near water or catch a breeze in the shade of a tree. Highland cows are basically the masters of slow summer living.

Our Highland cow socks are a fan favourite — cosy in look, but cool in feel thanks to breathable bamboo. With their shaggy charm and cheerful design, they’ll help your feet stay fresh and fabulous, no matter how high the temperature climbs.

Humans? We Have Bamboo Socks!

While we might not have feathers, hooves, or a built-in breeze-catching fringe, we do have bamboo socks, a true summer essential.

Bamboo socks are naturally breathable and moisture-wicking, which helps keep your feet cool and dry even on the hottest days. They’re also antibacterial, getting rid of any odour or funk.

What’s more, bamboo socks are incredibly soft, making them ideal for all-day wear in warm weather. Wear them when you're strolling through a park, heading to a summer festival or just relaxing in the garden. Your feet will stay fresh, comfy, and blissfully sweat-free.

So this summer, follow the lead of our animal friends: stay in the shade, chill when it’s hot, and treat your feet to the breathable magic of bamboo.
