Seals are an important part of the UK’s marine ecosystem, and protecting them is essential for maintaining a healthy balance in our oceans. The two species of seals found in the UK are the grey seal and the common seal. Grey seals are the larger of the two, and
their population is estimated to be around 120,000 in the UK. Here in the UK, we have 34% of the world population of grey seals and around 30% of the European common seal population.
Seals face a range of threats, including pollution, overfishing, and entanglement in fishing gear. Climate change also poses a threat, as rising sea temperatures and changing ocean currents can impact their food sources. In addition, seal pups are particularly vulnerable to disturbance, as human activity can cause them to be separated from their mothers or abandoned.
Protecting seal habitats and reducing human disturbance is essential for their survival. The Cornwall Seal Group Research Trust work to protect seals and their habitats, as well as raise awareness about the threats they face.
The population of grey seals in the UK is estimated to be around 120,000. However, the common seal population is much smaller, with an estimated 50,000 individuals remaining in the wild.
Cornwall Seal Group is a UK charity that works to conserve and protect the grey seal and common seal populations across the world. They work with multiple UK agencies influencing planning, policy and legislation in the UK to better protect our native seals and their marine home. The charity’s main goal is to ensure the long-term survival of these marine mammals by promoting their conservation through research,
education, and campaigning.
CSG conducts surveys and research on seal populations to monitor their numbers and to gather data on their behaviour, distribution, and health. They also work with local communities to raise awareness about the importance of protecting seals and their
habitats.
The work of CSG is crucial in protecting seal populations across the UK and the world, as these animals face a range of threats including entanglement in fishing gear, pollution, and disturbance by humans and dogs. Through their research, education, and conservation efforts, CSG is helping to ensure the continued survival of seals in the UK.
