5 Beauty Brands that care about the planet
By 2050, there will be 12 billion tonnes of beauty packaging in landfill.
What?! I can’t even fathom 12 billion tonnes. Apparently that is 35,000 empire state buildings, which my brain also cannot compute.
But then you look at the insides of any major drugs store, supermarket, department store or high street shop, and it actually makes sense. There are beauty products as far as the eye can see.
There is no need to go cold turkey, but your choices of product can make a difference.
A lot of brands, both new and old, are making an effort to be more eco-friendly. Here are a few the Bare Kind Ambassadors and I have come across.
1. The Body Shop - Wonky Carrot Cream
Every year 18 million tonnes of food waste ends up in landfill. Body shop are diverting wonky carrots from this very fate, and using them in moisturiser (and the packaging is 100% recyclable). A great idea for the noble wonky carrot, hopefully we will start seeing more solutions like this.
2. Rush Organics - Shampoo Bars
Shampoo bars - plastic-free, vegan, palm oil-free, SLS free. All I see in big capitals is WIN (oh and they are cheaper than Lush too).
3. Ben and Anna - Natural Deodorants
Natural, vegan deodorants in plastic-free packaging. Nice smells, happy noses, happy armpits.
4. DIY - Organic Beauty Recipes
This amazing blog has hundreds of recipes for making your own beauty products. Eve takes you through the benefits of the ingredients, gives tips on where she found the perfect containers, and breaks down recipes to make them simple to follow. A thoughtful present, a girls night in, a messy kitchen and happy skin.
5. Beauty Kitchen - Refillable containers
Beauty Kitchen think smart and think green. You can return your used containers (made from glass or aluminium) for free. They will wash and reuse them. It just makes SENSE.
